Items Not To Pack For Your Move

When getting ready for your move, there are some things that just can’t make the trip with you. And, while you may be aware of many of those items, some may come as quite a surprise to you when you are told on your moving day that they can’t be packed and taken along with you. Therefore, before your new endeavor, you will want to check on what restrictions are placed on items that are coming across state lines and which simply aren’t safe to transport.

Keeping Yourself Safe When You Move

Most of the items that cannot be packed fall under the lines of common sense. Anything that is flammable or explosive, poisonous, or perishable should not be moved with your things. What may be surprising are some of the items that fall under these categories. While you know not to take gasoline or matches with you, car and household batteries may not immediately come to mind as being problematic. Pesticides and your favorite gallons of paint have to stay behind. And, your fingernail polish remover? It needs to stay behind as well. The same is true of any cleaning solutions containing bleach, all of which are a definite no-no.

What about your outdoor things that don’t seem too unhappy sitting out in the heat of the summer sun and in your garage for years on end? Bags of fertilizer, the propane tank for your grill, and even pool chemicals seem like they could survive a journey without too much trouble. But, these items are not allowed by moving companies and you should consider not including them with your things if you are doing your own moving and are traveling a long distance. Try giving them to a neighbor or to a friend so they don’t go to waste.

Planning for Plants

While house plants don’t seem to be troublesome items to pack, some states restrict entry of plants from other areas of the country. Before bringing these, you will first want to make sure they are allowed. Many packing companies will not ship plants because of the extreme temperatures inside of the vans since often plants will die before reaching their final destination.

Looking Toward Your Kitchen

A final word of caution when determining what is ok to pack comes with your kitchen items. Since food is a perishable item, you again run the risk of moving companies not wanting to transport it. If at all possible, try to use up any food items you have before leaving. For those that you do not use, it is best to try to give them away or donate them to your local food pantry.

By following these rules, you should have a pleasant moving day ahead, without worry of having to try to restructure some of what you’ve packed due to unallowable items. Not only that, you will keep yourself safe as well as the items you are moving.
