What to Do 2 Weeks Before You Move
The proverbial clock is definitely ticking at this point in your moving process. Two weeks before the big move is the time when you start working on the day to day list of providers whose services you more than likely take for granted. You’ll want to make sure that once you arrive in your new town that everything is set up to continue flowing like clockwork.
Getting Your Accounts Squared Away
The biggest issue you will want to address two weeks before the move has to do with your financial accounts. Do you currently bank with a small local credit union or a major bank? Regardless of the type of institution you use, you need to find out if they have a branch where you are planning to move. If the answer is yes, then speak with a branch representative to find out what you need to do in order to have your information transferred to the branch in your new city. If the answer is no, then you have some work to do.
If you need to find a new banking institution, you will first need to find out what your banking options will be in your new town. You will then need to start arranging for new accounts to be opened there for you. You may want to go ahead and have some funds directed to these accounts so those funds will be available upon arrival in your new town. You will also want to empty out any safe deposit boxes at your current location and stop any automatic drafts you have set up. Closing and transferring your accounts to your new bank will save time and hassles once you’ve left as well.
Taking Care of Medical Issues
The next steps you will want to take are having your prescriptions transferred and locating a doctor in your new town in case of an emergency upon arrival. Having these taken care of will make your transition more seamless and will keep your health protected.
Tying Up Lose Ends
There are a few more issues you will want to address at this point in the process. If you are traveling by car, you should have your vehicle serviced to protect against any problems on the road. You should check to make sure you have picked up any items you left at the cleaners. You’ll also want to turn in any library books you still have or books due at your child’s school.
This is also the time you want to start notifying your utility companies that you will be moving. It is in your best interest to schedule the cut off date for one to two days after your anticipated move date in case there are any delays. You’ll also want to call at this point to have your new services turned on at your new location if you haven’t already done so. Lastly, you should start throwing out any items you’ve decided not to keep or donate them to local charities. With these small details taken care of, you are almost ready to go!
